Science is an emergent endeavour. The result of one experiment raises questions that prompt the scientist to devise a new experiment or at the very least explain the results. This process is often one that takes several years. There are often moments in the process where the experimenter is stumped. The eureka moment has not yet come. The experimenter may temporarily admit defeat, or even worse declare something as unknowable. The records of these moments are what guys like William Lane Craig and Frank Turek are looking for. Imagine a man wrote a song, a very powerful song whose central theme is “There is no agenda more important peace and living together without war”. What you don’t have to imagine is a ton of religious folks injecting their agenda into the song! Did they listen to the song? Did they think about what Lennon was trying to say? What is more likely is that they thought that free speech means that you can take the power of someone else’s art and use it to foist their own ideas, that they really never thought about onto other people!
Now, I’m all for free speech, you should be able to say what you want to say. However if you take Lennon’s song and use it to say something he didn’t intend for the song to say are you not kinda sorta,… STOMPING ALL OVER HIS RIGHT TO SAY WHAT HE WANTED TO SAY?????? I think you might be. Wait let me think about it for a second or two,…..
Yeah I’m pretty sure if you hijack someone else’s song and use it to broadcast ideas other than those intended by the author and then claim that free speech gives you the right to do it,.. you are a hypocrite.
So basically write your own song and say what you want to say and I’ll be the first person to defend your right to say it, even if I disagree.
In nearly every religion versus atheism or god versus no god discussion or debate I see on You Tube or elsewhere, the forces of religiosity invariably trot out Hitler and Stalin. The claim is that they were atheists who were trying to rid the world of religion by killing the faithful. By all accounts one could make a case that Stalin was on some level an atheist, but Hitler, was not. However even if he was in fact an atheist he would have had to round up all the Jews pretty much by himself because 99% of the population of Germany were Roman Catholics at the time! So the idea that Atheism played a major role in the Holocaust just doesn’t hold any water whatsoever. Religion however did play a role.
At the heart of all types of religion lies the idea that it is a virtue to believe without any sort of proof. When this idea is at the foundation of the belief system of any group, this group becomes easy to sway into actions that are immoral, hateful and in this case genocidal in nature. This underlying misguiding idea of faith as a virtue is reason enough in my opinion to rid oneself of any kind of religious belief.

Victims of repeated rape and abuse often begin to identify with their attackers. Battered women often won’t testify against the men that abuse them. In both instances the victims will often protect the very people that are the cause of all their pain. When someone says they love you it’s a powerful thing. Many of us don’t hear those words enough, a few of us not at all. Tell the preacher that nobody loves you and you know what the reply will always be. Jesus loves you.

In our lifetimes we’ve all seen or read about diseases that once killed millions, reduced to a minor inconvenience that can be avoided with a simple immunization. Our ability to defeat disease is a testament to the scientific method. This set of easy to follow rules provides the framework for any cure that has ever been. The experiments themselves may have been too complex for the layman to understand, however this simple framework that takes us from hypothesis to proof can be easily understood by almost anyone. This methodology has served humanity so well in fact, that I can only wonder why it hasn’t been applied to tackle the grandaddy of infectious disease; the most prolific epidemic to ever be set loose upon planet earth. This contagion that is referred to as “faith”.

Battered wives believe that their husbands love them. Battered wives believe that they deserve the beatings they get. It’s not true, nobody deserves to be physically and psychologically abused. Unfortunately these women still believe it. They also believe that one day things will get better, they just have to stay the course. This time he’ll treat her with respect, this time will be different. It’s an illogical cycle that leads to a loss of self worth that can completely destroy a personality.
When Richard Dawkins was writing material primarily for use by academics, there was little mention of him from the ranks of the religious. As soon as he began to write material designed to be understood and digested by regular people he began to catch holy heck from the clergy. This is because he hit upon something they fear. Currently the biggest obstacle in the way of religion is the entertainment industry.
