What Does Your Appendix Have in Common With Religion?

A Vestigial organ is a part of the body that used to serve a purpose but it’s no longer used or needed. So we have vestigial organs but we also have vestigial ideology. That’s what religion is. Read More...

Here’s my response/agreement with Mr. Deity/Brian Dalton’s response to the Pope’s speech accusing the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack of having provoked the attack and therefore deserving to be killed.

John Lennon's Imagine - Hijacked

Imagine a man wrote a song, a very powerful song whose central theme is “There is no agenda more important peace and living together without war”. What you don’t have to imagine is a ton of religious folks injecting their agenda into the song! Did they listen to the song? Did they think about what Lennon was trying to say? What is more likely is that they thought that free speech means that you can take the power of someone else’s art and use it to foist their own ideas, that they really never thought about onto other people!

Now, I’m all for free speech, you should be able to say what you want to say. However if you take Lennon’s song and use it to say something he didn’t intend for the song to say are you not kinda sorta,… STOMPING ALL OVER HIS RIGHT TO SAY WHAT HE WANTED TO SAY?????? I think you might be. Wait let me think about it for a second or two,…..

Yeah I’m pretty sure if you hijack someone else’s song and use it to broadcast ideas other than those intended by the author and then claim that free speech gives you the right to do it,.. you are a hypocrite.

So basically write your own song and say what you want to say and I’ll be the first person to defend your right to say it, even if I disagree.

Atheism Did Not Cause The Holocaust

In nearly every religion versus atheism or god versus no god discussion or debate I see on You Tube or elsewhere, the forces of religiosity invariably trot out Hitler and Stalin. The claim is that they were atheists who were trying to rid the world of religion by killing the faithful. By all accounts one could make a case that Stalin was on some level an atheist, but Hitler, was not. However even if he was in fact an atheist he would have had to round up all the Jews pretty much by himself because 99% of the population of Germany were Roman Catholics at the time! So the idea that Atheism played a major role in the Holocaust just doesn’t hold any water whatsoever. Religion however did play a role.
At the heart of all types of religion lies the idea that it is a virtue to believe without any sort of proof. When this idea is at the foundation of the belief system of any group, this group becomes easy to sway into actions that are immoral, hateful and in this case genocidal in nature. This underlying misguiding idea of faith as a virtue is reason enough in my opinion to rid oneself of any kind of religious belief.

Sigmund Freud VS God

Religion is festooned with a plethora of bad Ideas, false promises and doomsday predictions. These belief systems expend vast amounts of our time, energy, blood and money. This has been going on for centuries, and as our ability to make war has increased the danger from religious extremism has escalated exponentially. There is a hidden hierarchy here that I begin to see more and more as I delve into research, watch documentary films and read articles on faith and the lack thereof.

Clinging to Gods that Divide Us

Victims of repeated rape and abuse often begin to identify with their attackers. Battered women often won’t testify against the men that abuse them. In both instances the victims will often protect the very people that are the cause of all their pain. When someone says they love you it’s a powerful thing. Many of us don’t hear those words enough, a few of us not at all. Tell the preacher that nobody loves you and you know what the reply will always be. Jesus loves you.

Billions of People Infected With Faith

In our lifetimes we’ve all seen or read about diseases that once killed millions, reduced to a minor inconvenience that can be avoided with a simple immunization. Our ability to defeat disease is a testament to the scientific method. This set of easy to follow rules provides the framework for any cure that has ever been. The experiments themselves may have been too complex for the layman to understand, however this simple framework that takes us from hypothesis to proof can be easily understood by almost anyone. This methodology has served humanity so well in fact, that I can only wonder why it hasn’t been applied to tackle the grandaddy of infectious disease; the most prolific epidemic to ever be set loose upon planet earth. This contagion that is referred to as “faith”.

Faith Redeemed?

With all this “Big Brother” stuff going on these days, government ID that transmits your personal information, implantable identification chips injected into your arm etc., I wonder what this world is coming to. I mean I’ll bite your legs off before I let you stick a transmitter under my skin. As a musician I know all too well that if it’s digital it can be easily copied, hacked and used to make life unbearable! What freaks me out is that many religious folks agree with me!

It seems that for the faithful having such an implant is equivalent to taking on the mark of the beast! This is nonsense of course but it is one of the few examples I have found of delusional belief actually doing some good in the world! I don’t think this redeems the idea of religious belief, but I needed a snappy title to get you here so, there you go!

This does however make me wonder how this accidental sanity can be useful in the future. I think what I need is a program where, you type in what it is you want to do, and it finds the scripture that supports you, no matter how incredibly stupid the idea! That would be amazing I think. You could type in “behead the mailman” and It would give you chapter and verse, from any and all religious texts.

I mean that’s probably what Fox News does!

Battered Believer Syndrome

Battered wives believe that their husbands love them. Battered wives believe that they deserve the beatings they get. It’s not true, nobody deserves to be physically and psychologically abused. Unfortunately these women still believe it. They also believe that one day things will get better, they just have to stay the course. This time he’ll treat her with respect, this time will be different. It’s an illogical cycle that leads to a loss of self worth that can completely destroy a personality.

Religions Fear Atheism in Pop Culture

When Richard Dawkins was writing material primarily for use by academics, there was little mention of him from the ranks of the religious. As soon as he began to write material designed to be understood and digested by regular people he began to catch holy heck from the clergy. This is because he hit upon something they fear. Currently the biggest obstacle in the way of religion is the entertainment industry.
